This thrilling, heartfelt story follows a married couple navigating the storms of life, exploring how love and commitment endure through the most trying times. While the core themes—triumph over adversity and unexpected twists of fate—aren’t entirely new, Park Ji-eun infuses them with her signature charm and emotional depth. As the writer behind Crash Landing on You (a personal top-five favorite), she ensures the series carries the weight of her reputation—and, unsurprisingly, it does not disappoint. Even with some familiar story beats, I couldn’t help but adore it.

The narrative surprises are a joy to uncover, but one that left me grinning ear to ear? The moment Vincenzo Cassano himself made a cameo mid-season! Queen of Tears also breaks from convention with its bold use of a frame narrative, beginning at the end and looping back to reveal the journey. In a landscape where many South Korean dramas lean on the comfort of happily-ever-after endings, this series dares to carve a different path. Its layered storytelling and emotional resonance create an experience that’s both unique and deeply moving.

And, of course, any production bearing the Studio Dragon name comes with sky-high expectations for quality—and they’ve met every single one. The cinematography? Stunning. The soundtrack? Unforgettable. The casting? Perfection. Kim Soo-hyun’s comedic drunk scene, where he hilariously debates whether he’s too cute, is a standout that will live rent-free in my mind for a long time. He’s been a must-watch actor for me ever since It’s Okay to Not Be Okay.

Meanwhile, Kim Ji-won continues to prove why she’s one of the best in the industry. Her performance feels effortless yet profound, capturing her character’s essence with such grace that I couldn’t look away. She’s always been a star, but here, she shines brighter than ever. As someone who frequently re-watches Lovestruck in the City, I already knew how captivating she could be, but this show reminded me again of her incredible range.

This series had me so enthralled that I couldn’t wait to finish it before writing this post. Here I am, mid-season, compelled to share how much I’m loving it. Sometimes, a production strikes a chord so deeply that you find yourself reflecting on it before it even concludes—and Queen of Tears is undoubtedly one of those rare gems.
