I can’t shake the surprise, not just about the prize itself or the nationality of the recipient, but how this small South Asian country is so rich in artistic talent. I’ve always believed that awards aren’t the only measure of an artist’s worth. I’ve thought the same about Haruki Murakami’s career, he’s easily one of my favourite writers from Asia. His works, with their surreal beauty and emotional depth, have had a profound influence on me. As a Brazilian-born reader, I’ve had the privilege of immersing myself in the works of extraordinary authors like Clarice Lispector, José Saramago, Jorge Amado, Paulo Coelho, and Machado de Assis, among many others, whose literary brilliance knows no borders.

I don’t think Murakami cares much about accolades, but that’s just my humble opinion. However, seeing this wonderful South Korean woman win was truly enjoyable, not just because she’s female or from a country whose art I admire, but because it underscores the importance of recognizing great artists on a global stage.

I love South Korean art so much that I’ve dedicated a special section of my blog to it. One of the most powerful films I’ve seen from the country is Past Lives, a beautiful exploration of migration and identity. In the film, a young South Korean girl moves to Canada with her family, dreaming of winning a Nobel Prize in Literature or perhaps a Pulitzer, simply because she’s never seen anyone from South Korea achieve something like that. As someone who has migrated twice in my own life, I felt a deep connection to her story, the blend of longing, reinvention, and the pursuit of something larger.

This brings me back to Han Kang’s win. Imagine how many young girls will be inspired by her achievement! While awards aren’t the only validation an artist needs, they shine a critical spotlight on stories that might otherwise be overlooked. Han Kang’s success isn’t just a personal victory, it’s a moment that elevates a country’s culture, and it opens the door for other diverse voices to be heard. In this sense, accolades like these have a far-reaching impact. They not only recognize individual brilliance but also give hope and inspiration to those who may one day follow in those footsteps.
