“Exhuma” grips you from the start, blending horror and mystery against the eerie backdrop of a secluded coastal village in South Korea. Though this isn’t my preferred genre, I can’t look away. Director Jang Jae-hyun masterfully weaves horror, psychological thriller, and mystery, creating palpable tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat. As the story unfolds, themes of grief, guilt, and the supernatural come to life with depth and nuance, drawing you deeper into the chilling narrative. With Choi Min-sik, Kim Go-eun, and Lee Do-hyun in the cast, the drama reaches new heights.

Following in the footsteps of “The Wailing,” this production is an equally compelling journey. We delve into the intricacies of South Korean shamanism, a traditional form of animistic religion based on the belief that a multitude of gods watch over creation and human affairs. From the haunting rituals of exhumation to ceremonies aimed at appeasing restless spirits, every detail is portrayed with astonishing realism. Despite stellar acting and attention to detail, the plot occasionally stumbles, slightly detracting from an otherwise captivating experience. But that is just a personal note.
