Beyond Coaching

This post is unexpected. I typically share thoughts on players I admire, but Mr. Ancelotti is a coach so singular in his approach that I feel compelled to reflect more deeply on his exceptional work. If there’s one thing he has mastered over the years, it’s the path to titles. A four-time Champions League champion, he’s claimed the prestigious trophy across each of Europe’s five major leagues—England, Italy, Spain, Germany, and France. Currently in his second tenure at Real Madrid, Ancelotti’s managerial journey also includes stints at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich. A defining feature of his career has been his ability to work with star-studded squads, and the way he unites them into cohesive forces is nothing short of extraordinary.

It was surprising to me that Ancelotti didn’t win the Coach of the Year award, especially after leading Real Madrid to both the Champions League and La Liga titles last year. That said, one must also acknowledge the undeniable merits of Lionel Scaloni, who guided Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup—the pinnacle of football. Argentina’s performance was nothing short of exceptional, with Scaloni’s tactical brilliance evident throughout the tournament.

Ancelotti’s uniqueness goes beyond his tactical genius; his biography has even become a collective guide to effective leadership. I haven’t yet read Quiet Leadership—it’s on my list—but I’ve heard enough to know it offers a rare glimpse into his remarkable approach. The praise for his leadership speaks volumes, revealing a coach whose warmth and authenticity stand out in an often demanding profession. His ability to foster an environment where his collaborators thrive, free from undue pressure, has earned him the respect of those fortunate enough to work with him. It seems that, for Ancelotti, success isn’t born of external pressure but from the self-motivation he nurtures in others.

Another fascinating aspect of his life is the fact that his son works as his assistant coach. There’s something profoundly moving about seeing them both on the sidelines, contributing to the game they love together. It’s a testament to the enduring bond between family and passion, and it fills me with joy to watch.
