A Year of Becoming: Finding the Silver Lining

Time doesn’t knock.
It slips in, sits beside you, and waits for you to notice.

Last year, I wrote about the questions we carry as we age, questions of purpose, presence, and whether we’re living lives that feel true. I still don’t have answers. But I’ve learned to hold those questions more gently, like stones shaped smooth by a river’s slow persistence. They no longer demand resolution; they echo, and I listen.

This year has been a journey inward. I began working with an Emotional Intelligence coach, a mentor in understanding emotions, a process that feels like learning to breathe underwater: slower, deeper, more honest. One lesson lingers. When frustration or doubt clouds my view, I pause, searching for the glint beneath, the silver lining. My coach’s question guides me: “What’s one thing this moment is teaching you?” In the quiet space between reaction and response, growth waits, patient, steady. This question lingers with me.

I also moved into a new home, a physical shift that brought an emotional one. This house is quieter, its light softer, its corners more forgiving. For the first time, I have a space just for writing: a small office with a desk, a record player humming vinyl into the air, shelves of books that carry my past forward, and a few wall frames showcasing posters of my beloved films. Each scratch on the desk, each title on the spine, each framed image speaks of memory and intention. This room feels like the threshold between who I was and who I’m becoming, a sanctuary where my voice can arrive whole.

And I’ve been writing, more than I have in years. Essays spill onto pages. Short stories and reflections collect in notebooks. I’ve even dusted off old scripts, revisiting lines that read like letters from former selves. Some truths have softened; others hold firm. Writing, for me, has shifted. It’s less about crafting something clever and more about uncovering something honest. I write to understand. To connect. To bridge the space between then and now.

So today, I mark another trip around the sun. Not with fanfare, but with quiet gratitude, for the questions that remain, for the silver linings I’ve learned to find, and for those who walk beside me, even when I can’t name the destination. For the stories I’ve told, and the ones still waiting for words.

As I reflect, I wonder: What spaces have shaped you this year? What questions echo in your quiet moments? Share your thoughts below.
