Viva o Meu Sangue Latino!

NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series, which launched almost 15 years ago in my beloved Washington D.C. initially focused on rock and folk musicians. Over time, it has evolved into a major platform in the music industry, showcasing performers from all genres and creating iconic pop culture moments. As a devoted fan, I’d even dare to say it rivals what MTV was in the ’80s and ‘90s, shaping musical trends and giving emerging artists a platform to reach vast audiences. So, as a Brazilian at heart, discovering Tiny Desk Brasil has been nothing short of thrilling. I’m absolutely captivated by it.

Spearheading the project in Brazil through a collaboration with Anonymous Content, this new YouTube series wil highlight exclusive versions, revelations and rediscoveries of Brazilian music. Five episodes have been ordered for the first season, with the show’s studio located in São Paulo.

The series premiered on October 7th with João Gomes, the Pernambuco singer-songwriter who had the honor of opening the Brazilian version of the program. Known for his contemporary take on Northeastern Brazilian music, Gomes blends regional styles like forró and piseiro with elements from choral music and hip-hop. The series also featured Péricles, the beloved pagode artist whose smooth vocals and charismatic stage presence have made him a staple of Brazilian samba and pagode for decades, as well as Céu, the innovative MPB artist whose ethereal voice and experimental approach fuse Brazilian rhythms with jazz, electronica, and global influences.

But the most impressive performance came from my beloved Ney Matogrosso, a Brazilian icon whose androgynous style and powerful countertenor voice have made him a trailblazing figure in MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) for over five decades. His presence on Tiny Desk Brasil bridges generations and showcases the timeless artistry of Brazilian music.

For those unfamiliar with Portuguese, the title of this piece, “Viva o Meu Sangue Latino!” Translates to “Long live my Latin blood!” It’s a joyful declaration of pride in Latin American heritage, and watching Tiny Desk Brasil brings that feeling to life with every performance. This series isn’t just showcasing music; it’s celebrating who we are.
