The Haunting of Bly Manor, Mike Flanagan’s second Netflix series succeeding The Haunting of Hill House, takes a unique approach. While not a direct sequel, it features the same ensemble cast, showcasing Flanagan’s distinctive method of collaboration with his team, which I find quite fascinating. The narratives are independent yet share a flexible, deconstructed adaptation theme, drawing inspiration from renowned novels centred around haunted houses. Although Flanagan was less actively involved in Bly Manor’s direction compared to Hill House, his personal touch, especially in the horror aspect, is still discernible.

The narrative unfolds within the walls of the rural mansion named Bly Manor in the United Kingdom. The story gains momentum after the introduction of a new nanny for the two children residing there, who appears oblivious to the peculiar occurrences within the estate. It delves into the lives of individuals coping with unusual wounds and seemingly ordinary misfortunes as they share their daily experiences intersecting at Bly Manor. The children’s acting skills were truly stunning! While some scene sequences prove intricate to follow, one can only imagine the effort invested in bringing them to life. And, of course, it’s genuinely terrifying!
