It’s all fragments, woven together, isn’t it?
What stirs when you hear empathy? A fleeting warmth? A glance that whispers, I see you? At its core, empathy is a quiet awakening—the choice to slip, even for a breath, into another’s world. Like a mother’s gentle instinct, it sees, soothes, and holds steady.
Every act of empathy carries twin currents: the feeling and the choice to act. It sparks when we glimpse a struggle—a faltering step, a shadowed gaze—and deepens when we reach to soften it. A kind word. A steady hand. A message sent when it matters most.
But what makes some moments endure, etched into memory? What turns a kindness into a quiet revolution?
Perhaps this: not everyone acts on the spark. Yet those who do—those who pause to connect in a world racing past—can reshape a day. Sometimes, a life.
Empathy asks no grand gestures. Only attention. A choice to mend connection in a world torn by hurry. In these soft, nearly invisible choices, change takes root.
How far a single act of kindness can ripple.
This truth came alive at a Mother’s Day celebration I helped organize with Magma, our settlement agency in Greater Moncton, where we support newcomers—refugees, students, asylum seekers—stitching new lives. In our Club House, the event bloomed, warm and familiar: little artists giggled, painting picture frames, a children’s movie hummed, and mothers—single, grieving, or starting anew—chatted over coffee and Timbits, that classic Canadian treat, eh? Glitter spilled, smiles spread, and tulips, gifted to every proud mother, brightened hands.
One moment anchored me. A mother, clutching her tulip like a fragile hope, lingered as the crowd thinned. She turned to leave, then paused. Her eyes, soft but heavy with unshed tears, met mine. “Thank you,” she whispered. “I was crying at home, so depressed I barely came. This… it made me feel welcomed. Like I belong.”
Her words, so simple, shifted the weight of my entire weekend.
Community Connections—the threads of belonging—are the heartbeat of any thriving community. At Magma, we create spaces where newcomers, and all mothers carrying unseen burdens, feel seen. That day, one woman’s quiet confession reminded me why I do this work. A single morning, a single connection, can hold a heart steady.
This Mother’s Day, let’s pause to see the mothers around us—to offer a gesture, however small, that says, You are enough. Here’s to all mothers—resilient, grieving, or beginning again—who carry loss, hope, and the courage to rise.
