The other day, a doctor’s call broke the quiet—a small moment, yet significant. When you’re waiting for news about your own body, even silence can feel fragile. And usually, no news is good news, right? It was a follow-up, a ripple from an exam that had lingered in the back of my mind, tugging at the edges of my thoughts. Then came relief—the voice on the line reassured me: everything’s fine. The next appointment is already set for a year from now, part of the rhythm my province, New Brunswick, orchestrates for me. A fleeting exchange, yet it settled something deep within me, even as it stirred a cascade of thoughts.
Of course, simple things always carry me away. They make me write.
Here we are, cradled in these tender, trembling forms—bodies that sway and sigh, that hold our laughter close and bear our quiet fears. They are more than mere vessels, aren’t they? They are companions, etched with every stumble, every rise. Beyond my own skin, I see you—another soul tracing its own arc, woven into this wild, wondrous dance we all share. How fragile it is, this fleeting pulse of life. How achingly beautiful.
Stay here with me for a moment. How often, in the rhythm of your day, do you pause to give thanks for your health? For the simple, unremarkable ways your body carries you? The quiet, often unnoticed gifts—eating a meal and feeling warmth rather than pain, breathing in crisp air on a walk, legs moving without protest. I struggle with stomach issues, and yet, on the days I feel good, gratitude floods me. And then there’s music—my daily companion—flowing through my headphones as I walk, my thoughts carried away in its current, my body moving freely, no pain in my feet or knees. These moments feel almost sacred.
I’m trying to live one day at a time. No pressure, no grand future endeavours pressing against the present. The practical plans, of course, still exist—they must—but slowly, I am learning to savour the now. The body isn’t just a tool. It’s a living, changing entity, carrying our joys, worries, and stories, deserving care and appreciation despite its imperfections. And beyond our individual experiences, we are all part of something larger—a collective motion, a shared, messy, marvelous dance. Unique, yet bound together in the same forward momentum through time.
