Directed by Ai Weiwei Written by Chin-chin Yap, Tim Finch and Boris Cheshirkov

“Human Flow” is an inspiring project by artist and activist Ai Weiwei, aiming to raise awareness about the refugee crisis. Covering 23 countries and shot over a year, it documents the lives of some of the 65 million refugees currently displaced from their homes. Ai Weiwei occasionally inserts himself into the documentary, which, rather than detracting from the narrative, adds a sense of solidarity. The narrative is raw and clear, prompting reflection on the intersection of art and refugeeism.

The film combines standard camera work with clear-yet-shaky iPhone footage and expansive drone shots, effectively conveying the scale of the situation and enhancing the visual beauty of the piece. The most powerful aspect of this production is portraying asylum seekers as people rather than creating a spectacle out of them. By showcasing their stories, it addresses a subject we humans need to talk about. #WithRefugees
