While director and lead actor Ricky Gervais’ previous shows are comedy masterpieces, such as the famous “The Office,” “After Life” takes a different direction. It embraces classic dark and controversial humor, devoid of slapstick. In my opinion, it stands as one of his most significant creations, offering viewers something deeper than just a good laugh.

The series delves into themes of grief and loss, reminding me somewhat of “Move to Heaven,” though the approach is distinct. It authentically portrays grief, with Gervais delivering a compelling performance as a man who exists but doesn’t truly live. The series’s strength lies in evoking emotions; each line prompts reflection on life, emphasizing the importance of self-care and the need for supportive relationships during challenging times.

Gervais’s acting and direction are so brilliant that the emotions feel genuine, creating moments that aren’t forced but evoke a visceral response, even inducing lumps in your throat. Despite not being for everyone, and Gervais openly not caring about what people think of him, I just adore it! The language is heavy, the plot demands courage, and the characters are incredibly relatable. That’s life, isn’t it? Another noteworthy aspect is the crucial contribution of Antilly, the German shepherd dog who plays Brandy. It deserves a round of applause!
